The coral type found mostly here is the type locally called “Gampara”. These corals are found in various forms, shapes and colors. KalpitiyaDespite its natural beauty, the western peninsular area of KALPITIYA in the Puttalam district of Sri Lanka is remarkably untouched by tourism.  But for those lucky enough to visit, there’s a plethora of things to see and do!  With the small close-knit fishing community dominating the lives of the local people, visitors can get a real insight into working life away from the city.  After watching the night fishing boats return in the morning, a visit to one of the fish markets offers the opportunity to choose the evening meal direct from the fresh catch!  The Dutch Fort and St Peter’s Kerk church in the town itself are interesting examples of Sri Lanka’s rich history and colonial past.
Leisurely boat rides up the lagoon and canoe trips down the river are a pleasant way of exploring the coastline, whilst 4WD jeep rides along the deserted sand dunes between the ocean and the lagoon offer a unique way of watching the colorful evening sunsets. For keen scuba divers and snorkelers, the largest coral reef in Sri Lanka (‘Bar reef’) is only an hour’s boat trip from Kalpitiya.  This beautiful reef is home to an incredible variety of tropical fish as well as offering sighting of manta rays, reef sharks and the occasional turtle!

ColomboThe commercial capital of Sri Lanka is populated by 1.9 million. It consists of fine buildings ranging from 19th century to 21st century architecture. One can find harsh concrete blocks and cool rocky wooden shacks are not an extensive giant like many Asian cities. The atmosphere is general leisure in true Asian style. The roads are busy with large number of vehicles. In the 8th century AD, Arab merchants settled near the sight of the modern port and began trading with the Sinhalese Kingdom based in near by Kotte (Also the sight of the modern day Sri Lankan Parliament). The Portuguese (from 1505) followed by Dutch (from1658) build houses at fort, but the most obvious visible signs of the city’s colonial past were left here by the British who took control at the end of 18th century. Colombo became the island’s capital in 1815, after the Sinhalese chiefs deposed the King of Kandy- the last Sri Lankan King- and gave up his territory to the British. The stone paved roads that were built by English during the colonial period are still in use in Pettah area.  Further; Colombo possesses very active share market dealings and many star class hotels, banks, hospitals, harbour and other important institutions.

The number of elephants has increased to more than 65 now; including Baby Elephants brought from various parts, as well as some of the (more than 25) babies born in here, due to the captive- breeding programme. The elephants at Pinnawala have their time-table. The best time to visit is the feeding time from 0930-1000 hrs. and 1330-1400 hrs. and the bathing time from 1000-1030 hrs. and 1400-1430 hrs., when all the elephants are taken to the river close by.  Today some of these orphans enjoy the luck of seeing their grandchildren born in the same location. Although the original objective is there, it soon became a conservation and educational centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawala started a scientific captive-breeding programme for elephants. The Free movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river plays a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawala was born.  The success story of Pinnawala has drawn the attention of scientists from all over the world. A considerable number of books and research articles on Pinnawala have been published in several languages. The members of the Pinnawala herd have been filmed, videoed and photographed thousands of times by professionals. Anyone can observe how these giants of the jungle have compassionate connection.

Water Sports at BentotaThe best place for water sports is Bentota on the West Coast, which is approximately 2.5 hours south from the airport. It benefits from a large flat estuary at the mouth of the Bentota Ganga, which ensures safe waters all year round for wakeboarding windsurfing, waterskiing, banana rides, donuts, kayaking and jet ski. Therefore, even during the monsoon (April-Nov) when the sea is unsafe for swimming and other activities have to cease the water sports can continue. Other activities include river cruises and from Nov-March surfing, body boarding, deep sea fishing, snorkelling and diving.
• Afternoon (1.00pm) visit Turtle hatchery & Madu River boat safari.

Turtle Hatchery

Is a conservation project to survive the turtles because it’s an endangered species. Sri Lanka is a safe haven for turtles. Out of eight remaining turtle species five of them lay their eggs on Sri Lankan coast during the breeding season (December to February).

Madu RiverWhich is one of the most beautiful wetlands of Sri Lanka. The importance of this estuarine lagoon was recognized with the declaration as a RAMSAR in March 2004. With this declaration, Madu river has been given the status as a wetland of international importance. Madu River is very rich in natural stands of Mangroves. These Mangroves are able to grow in this river area due to development of special adaptations. There are total 14 different species of Mangroves to be found. It is also a wonderful place to observe animals, especially birds. The best time to do so just after sunrise or just before the sunset. At this time bird-singing is eminent. The boat travels are available for whom, loves to travel in water through this wetland and jungle.

• Dinner and Overnight in Bentota

Day 3
BENTOTA / GALLE / BENTOTA
• After breakfast (8:00am) day trip to Galle
• Sightseeing of Galle (Visiting Dutch fort & Dutch Museum)

Galle

Was once the key port of Sri Lanka. Galle is still well known for hand-made lace. You can also visit the Galle Fort (spanning 90 acres), which was originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. Travellers must not miss the fishing during the day and night time in the beautiful sea. This is very much suitable for water sport. This is a World Heritage site too.

• En-route visit glass bottom boat ride in Hikkaduwa for view famous underwater sea corals garden.

Coral Gardens

Hikkaduwa, a popular tourist destination in the Galle District is renowned for its beach and the corals. The Coral Garden here is considered to be the best out of all such coral gardens found in Asia. There is a reef of lime stones running parallel to the coast. The corals are in between this line of lime stones and the coast. The sea up to about 200 m from the coast is very shallow. The reef of lime stones protects the corals from high tide. The coral type found mostly here is the type locally called “Gampara”. These corals are found in various forms, shapes and colors. They are a very fascinating sight especially when there is bright sunlight which gives a very clearer view of the corals. You see some corals in the shape of a cabbage leaf; some are like a lady’s fan. Since there is no silt, corals can grow in their natural form and color.

• Dinner & Overnight in Bentota

Day 4
BENTOTA / AIRPORT
