At “Brazen Palace” (2nd Century B.C), the 1600 stone columns you see are all that is left of a magnificent multi-storied residence for monks. “Ruwanweliseya” (2nd century B.C) is the most famous of all the Dagobas (monuments). It originally depicted the perfect “bubble Shape” that modern restoration has not been able to reproduce accurately. “Samadhi Buddha statue” (4th century AD) is one of the most famous statues, depicting the Buddha in a state of “Samadhi” or in deep meditation. By gazing on this statue one can position tranquillity in hassled mind. “Isurumuniya Rock temple” (3rd century B.C) is well known for its rock carvings, such as ‘The Lovers’ and ‘Man and the horse’. All these special places consist with many legends that one cannot prove faulty. |

Ritigala rock, rising up some 766 meters (2513 ft) towards the sky, captures the imagination of visitor. The history of this mountain goes back to the time of King Ravana in Ramayana. Having a legendary, historical and monastic past it remains in the consciousness of the villager retreat that jealously guards many a secret of years by gone. Ruins of monasteries, ponds, and other unidentified edifices, now silent and reticent, evoke awe and wonder for a stupendous past where hundreds of monks once lived in these monasteries cells and rock shelters a life of utter simplicity and detachment. For thousands of years Ritigala retained its importance as a forest monastic complex only to come under the barrage of the South Indian invasion at the end of the tenth century. Since that it retreated into the jungles and went out from human memory until James Mantell, a Government Surveyor established a trigonometrically station on its summit and made mention of the existence of the late 19th century. |
